Championing local government

It’s rather easy if not rather predictable that we will blame government for our woes – and that includes local government.

However, at today’s session at Sidmouth Library, a Devon County Council event was well-attended and very lively. The reorganising Devon’s local government roadshow came to Sidmouth – and it was very much about getting us to have our say on their proposals for the future of Devon:

A new model offers the chance to eliminate duplication, simplify structures, and unlock efficiencies, ensuring resources are invested in frontline services rather than administration. Local accountability will be strengthened, with decisions made closer to communities, empowering residents to shape their future.

Their accompanying Have Your Say Today survey [available online] will provide feedback to help shape local policies, services, and investments to reflect the needs and priorities of our community. And so the form asks what our priorities are when it comes to local government, as we look to the proposed changes to council structures.

Similarly, East Devon District Council have been reaching out to engage their citizens in determining the future of the council – both to have our say on the future of local government in Devon and to showcase their work with volunteer groups in the District.

A thank you event for local voluntary organisations

In particular the council is keen to champion the anti-poverty work which both local government and local communities can work on as they look to the proposals for reorganising councils.

In other words, we need to be looking beyond the changes in the system, and to make sure that whatever new system we end up with gives people what they need.

So, here’s championing local government!
