Some great news and some great quotes about a new champion for Sidmouth:
JJ Waller is a British photographer who has made street photographs of Brighton—his home town—and other seaside towns.
Waller’s unique street credentials as both a performer and a photographer conjure a great sense of people in a place.
In association with Sidmouth School of Art, the Sidmouth Folk Festival we were thrilled to welcome JJ Waller as Artist Photographer in Residence during the 2024 festival. During JJ’s Sidmouth Residency he captured a set of images that conjure a sense of place when the town plays host for our week of music, dance and song, in his inimitable style of street photography. This is JJ’s personalised snapshot in time. In the autumn, JJ returned to Sidmouth to review and select images for the exhibition. A variety of sites feature images including bus shelters, telephone boxes and the Wall Space billboard by the Ham.

In an exciting development led by Sidmouth School of Art, a new public open air art space opened Saturday 15 February, with a brand-new exhibition featuring some of the people and groups that make up Sidmouth’s remarkable community.
Following his visits and after meeting many groups and individuals in the community, JJ described Sidmouth as “a unique, can-do town, full of can-do people.”
A selection of the images will be exhibited in the newly created Riverside Art Space in the Sensory Garden located at the end of the Ham in Sidmouth. The work will be displayed on five new ‘gabion’ baskets in the garden and the building at the location.

Congratulations to the team on creating a beckoning display of Sidmouth’s strong community life and pooled kindness and knowledge. Thanks for transforming The Ham area into a great destination place!
