What is ‘community’?

In the Sid Valley, there have been many examples from just the last couple of weeks – all of which show what we mean by ‘community’.

‘Community’ can mean volunteering:

It goes without saying that volunteers have played a key role in the pandemic response… This is a time for us to come together and thank all volunteers for their invaluable contribution whether shopping and befriending or providing meals for the most vulnerable during lockdown or helping with the vaccination programme… 

Personally, I have volunteered in a variety of roles since I moved here over 14 years ago and it has helped me settle, make friends, feel purposeful and part of the community.

‘Community’ can mean getting together and being creative:

Sidmouth Coastal Community Hub has been working in collaboration with artist David Shrigley OBE and students at the college from the beginning of the term with the aim of transforming an unloved wall overlooking the car park at Port Royal into a visual public gallery space…

“Sidmouth College art department continues to enjoy working on community projects such as this and our students are very lucky to have the opportunity to have their work showcased on this scale.”

‘Community’ can mean giving space/time/resources to others:

Mel Whittock, director of the Samaritans branch, said: “It’s a real bonus for the charity and for the community to be able to display the work of talented local artists of all kinds, as well as raising funds.”
