We have an elderly population in these parts – and if we are to future-proof Sidmouth, we need to be looking ahead to how we can ensure care and provision for this important part of our community.
We can help by championing those who actively look after those in need – and so in the new year, Devon carers were celebrated for their long service and dedication. And recently on these pages we were celebrating the work of Healthwatch: Devon’s health champions.
A fabulous piece of recognition was made late last year to Home Instead Exeter and East Devon with a Dementia Care award:
Jill Malpass, registered manager at Home Instead Exeter and East Devon, said: “We are incredibly honoured to receive this recognition. Dementia affects not only the individual but their entire network of loved ones. Our team works every day to support families through what can be a very emotional journey, and this award reflects the dedication and passion our Care Professionals bring to every visit.”

The organisation offers free training and workshops to families, organisations, and the wider community to raise awareness of dementia and reduce stigma.
Meanwhile, an Exeter dementia care campaign has stepped up pressure on the government after the Budget over fears that it is driving up the cost of essential day care for people with dementia; and Army doctors have joined the Exeter project to end the ‘dementia tax’.
There are excellent services for those who suffer from and who care for those with dementia, from the county council [Worried about your memory? Access support and advice in Devon] and from Sidmouth’s very own champions of health and social care [Memory Loss & Dementia | Sid Valley Help]
