Great make-do-and-mend projects for schools

A lot of schools have been putting their project work on-line for us to learn from and make use of – very much part of their Design and Technology courses:

As part of our topic on World War Two we have been looking at how people had to make do and mend. We decided that we would have a go ourselves. Old Clothes were donated to the school for us to work with. The old articles of clothing were re-designed, cut and sewn, changing the old clothing into something new. We then performed a show to the school. This is a small film of us wearing the finished clothing. Make do and mend – Swinemoor Primary School

As part of our World War 2 topic, Y6 pupils have been practising their sewing skills. During the war, clothing was rationed and many families stretched their ration-coupons by repairing their existing clothing or exchanging their ration coupons for the raw materials to make new clothes. Inspired by the thought of repairing or reinvigorating an item of clothing they already owned, Year 6 have been developing their knowledge of different stitches and choosing the appropriate stitches to use for different elements of their designs. The children also had to select from a range of fabrics and consider the qualities of the different materials.Make do and Mend – Dore Primary School
