MPs have the right idea — it’s high time we stopped buying new clothes and remembered the value of the sewing kit

The Commons environmental audit committee has called for a 1p levy on every item of clothing sold, to raise £35million a year for collection and recycling.

But MPs also want lessons in school on “designing, creating, mending and repairing clothes”. They think it will also give anxious teens a creative outlet.

Mary Creagh, the Labour chair, said: “Fashion shouldn’t cost the earth. Our insatiable appetite for clothes comes with a huge social and environmental price tag. Children should be taught the joy of making and mending clothes in school as an antidote to anxiety and the mental health crisis. And consumers must play their part by buying less, mending, renting and sharing more.”
