What is Sustainable Sidmouth – and how can the Transition Town movement help?

SUSTAINABLE SIDMOUTH AWARDS 2023

It was back in 2008 that the Vision Group for Sidmouth took on ‘Transition Town’ status – and added the ‘Sustainable Sidmouth’ brand.

The Transition Town movement

So, why does the VGS have to be part of a larger organisation?

Transition is a movement that has been growing since 2005.  It is about communities stepping up to address the big challenges they face by starting local. By coming together, they are able to crowd-source solutions. They seek to nurture a caring culture, one focused on supporting each other – as groups and as wider communities.

Transition Network

So said Horst Köhler, former German president and president of the IMF, on ‘Transition’:

I see it as a wonderful combination of civic local engagement and a worldwide network.  In many towns throughout the world people get together, enthusiastic about the idea of together envisioning a future model for their town that will make it worth living in.”

And Peak Oil…

Transition towns are local communities proactively preparing for an oil-scarce future in a warming world by reducing their dependence on fossil fuels and helping mitigate climate change by re-localizing, shifting production closer to home and creating functioning communities, with the idea that strong neighborhood networks will help towns to weather future energy shocks.

Transition towns address the issues of peak oil, climate change and economic instability by creating a strong, connected, self-sufficient community.
