Showcasing sustainable projects: Eager Beavers TSJ

The Eager Beavers in Tipton St John are a very active group just over the border on the River Otter:

We are a community based group situated in the beautiful village of Tipton St John and are Ambassadors for the East Devon AONB. We meet up to collect litter, plant seeds and bulbs for the bees and pollinators and test the water in the River Otter. We are a friendly proactive group who believe it’s great to get outdoors , catch up with like minded people and do our bit for the planet at the same time.

They are an active partner of the AONB:

EagerBeaversTSJ were formed in 2021 as a local environmental community group hoping to raise awareness of the need to reduce plastic and man-made waste entering our sewers, rivers and sea. Since then, we have also planted for bees and pollinators, have placed numerous bug houses, bat and bird boxes throughout the village and most recently created a community garden.

And the Herald has chronicled some of these activities over the last few months:

The group, who created a community garden earlier this year, are now working on an adjacent piece of land where they plan to hold events next year. The group has been allocated funding from East Devon District Council to prepare the patch for outdoor workshops and other activities, and make it accessible to all. They have already put in some tree stumps, donated by JJ Tree Services, to use as seating, and have held drumming and foraging workshops there.

Six owl boxes are being put up in and around Tipton St John, thanks to the Eager Beavers environmental group, the Ottery Men’s Shed and Ottery Town Council. One nesting box for tawny owls has already been fixed high up in a tree at the Sundial Nursing Home and the other boxes will be sited in the near future. Lisette Johnston from Eager Beavers said: “We have two or three more tawny owl boxes, one little owl and one barn owl box left to site.
