Love Your Beach Day with the College

Students took part in sea swimming and surf lifesaving skills, a beach clean, beach art and had a private tour of the RLNI centre.

As reported on Devon Live, sea swims and lifesaving drills transformed the Sidmouth students’ day:

Lisa Whitworth, headteacher at Sidmouth College, said: “I was blown away by the determination and spirit our students showed. For many, this was a completely new experience, but they threw themselves into every activity. Love Your Beach Day gave them a chance to learn important life skills and connect with our beautiful coastline in a meaningful way.”

Moria Marder, chief executive of the Ted Wragg Trust, added: “This is what education is all about, giving young people opportunities to grow, explore, and make a difference. From lifesaving skills to litter-picking, our young people are learning to respect and enjoy our valuable coastline.”

With further reports and photos from the Herald on Sidmouth College pupils enjoying the ‘Love Your Beach Day’:

The college encourages students to take part in activities that build confidence, teamwork, and independence. Events like Love Your Beach Day are designed to support personal growth while fostering a sense of environmental responsibility.

Staff said they were proud of the students’ enthusiasm and willingness to try something new, especially those who had never been sea swimming before. The college plans to continue offering similar opportunities in the future.

And as part of the Devon School Games happening across the county, the Love Your Beach event won the School Games Impact Award 2025:

The Love Your Beach event was shortlisted and WON the Youth Sport Trust and sailGP Impact League School Award. The award recognises schools, School Games Organisers, Active Partnerships, National Governing Bodies of Sport, and National Disability Sports Organisations who contribute to developing a better planet by embracing sustainable school sport and embracing the School Games Eco Friendly value.

Congratulations all!
