It’s very much in the news: Seaweed packaging brand Kelpi raises over £3m to drive growth | News | The Grocer

Including from Business Live South West this weekend:

A Bristol biotech start-up that has developed compostable food packaging made from seaweed has secured £3m in seed funding. Kelpi, which was previously based at the University of Bath, said the cash injection would bring its packaging “a step closer to supermarket shelves”.

The company says its bioplastic technology is marine safe and carbon neutral, and will reduce the use of single-use plastics. The company has already received private and public investment.

“This landmark investment enables Kelpi to scale up our pioneering work using seaweed to create bioplastic packaging with the barrier properties required by clients,” said Kelpi chief executive and co-founder Neil Morris. “Kelpi can now play a key role in eliminating plastic pollution and ending our dependence on fossil fuels to create single-use packaging. We’re delighted to receive this backing from specialist deep science and sustainability investors like Science Creates Ventures and Green Angel Syndicate to allow us to accelerate our pioneering work with major food and drink companies worldwide to prove our materials at scale.”
