Alex Walton: winner ‘Urban Lines’: SW Coast Path photography competition

As the Herald reports today, photographers in East Devon have just won important accolades:

In particular, Alex Walton of Ottery St Mary has won the Urban Lines category for his picture of the Sidmouth Esplanade:

Urban Lines

The urban environment is not what the South West Coast Path is famed for, but it’s an important element and often a significant place for rest and recuperation between the more remote sections. Get inspired by the townscapes and cityscapes and celebrate the urban lines of the South West Coast Path.

Judge Jessica Lennan said: “This photo demonstrates a clever use of lines in its composition. The street winding alongside the beach serves as a prominent leading line, accentuated by the light trails of passing cars as well as the dotted streetlights. Captured during twilight, the image reveals further details of the surrounding buildings and sea for us to explore. Despite being mostly man-made in an urban setting, the lines in the photo retain an organic quality, which we particularly liked.”

It’s only appropriate that this has to be my Picture of the Day, having won the Urban Lines category of the South West Coast Path photo competition. Here’s the full, uncropped version of the one shared by BBC Devon (tap to see fully). I’m looking forward to July when the photo will be printed large and will join the other winning shots for an exhibition at Paddington Station!
