Art celebrating personal, social and cultural identity

The Wallspace by the Ham has allowed the showcasing of all sorts of creativity in Sidmouth, including, for example, art celebrating the community’s volunteers from a year ago.

This time we’re seeing the creative efforts of young people in the CODEX – Digital and Print Project – now on display:

The CODEX Project is a collaboration with Sidmouth College students and Sidmouth School of Art. Traditional and digital forms combine innovatively to express identity. The project takes inspiration from ‘The Thamesmead Codex’ by artist Bob & Roberta Smith and explores a range of techniques and processes including digital print, typography, photography and experimental printing using gelli plates.

As the  Ted Wragg Trust says, the CODEX Project connects Sidmouth students with creativity and community:

Their art is now on display in Sidmouth’s Wallspace, the iconic Telephone Box Micro Museums, and has even caught the attention of Arts Council England, who has featured it on their Instagram page.

The CODEX Project aims to continue engaging with young people across Devon, with Sidmouth School of Art hoping to extend the project to teachers and students throughout the region. The initiative is part of the Sidmouth Makes Art (SMArt) Project, which strives to foster creativity in the local community.

The Herald also carries the story of how Sidmouth College students showcase creativity in this art project, as does Devon Live, looking at their bold new artwork in this town-wide exhibition.

A great video looks at how the art came to be:
